Puppies
We take pride in everything we do to get our puppies off to a great start. This begins with careful selection of dogs that are quality examples of the breed. The American Chesapeake Club Breed Standard serves as our guide in an effort to stay true to the original form and function of the breed. We breed for the whole dog which means that we do not focus on any one aspect such a size or color.
All dogs used in our breeding (both our personal dogs and the stud dogs we use) are health tested according to the recommendations of the American Chesapeake Club and new owners are provided with documentation of all health clearances.
We whelp and raise our puppies in our home in the very center of our family life because during their time with us, they are central to everything we do. Our daily handling of every puppy provides stimulation of their senses, exposure to new experiences, mental enrichment and, of course, lots of affection. We keep our puppies very clean and one way we do this is to provide them with a bathroom area that is away from the places where they sleep and play. This reinforces their natural instincts to keep their living space clean and these habits really pay off when puppies transition to their new homes. Our puppies stay with their littermates and their mother until at least 8 weeks of age in order to benefit from all of the social life-lessons to be learned from living in a pack. They learn to share and to be gentle and they learn to play in acceptable ways.
We spend so much time with our puppies that we come to know each one as an individual and can describe details of their unique behaviors. We see differences in their courage and their risk-taking. We can point out the real problem-solvers in the litter. We know who is more assertive and who is more laid-back. We recognize who makes the best eye contact and who prefers to do their own thing. We watch differences develop in their visual tracking of thrown objects. And, we can tell you who has the keenest nose in the bunch. As the pups physically mature, we may see differences in their conformation to the breed standard. We might see slight differences in head shape or in amount of spring of rib. Our trained eye may notice differences that make one puppy stand out as a better prospect for future breeding. Every puppy is different as is every home. We use our intimate knowledge of each puppy to match puppies with homes. For example, if we have a particularly high drive, assertive puppy, we are more likely to place that puppy in a working home than in a family companion home with young children. Our goal is to give each family what works best for them while also making sure that each pup is successful in their new home.
Other important things to know about Weatherdeck pups:
We screen homes very carefully. Please don’t take take the process personally. We feel a strong responsibility for the pups we bring into the world and we take our time and make sure that we get each placement right.
Prior to going to their new homes, our pups are wormed multiple times, and receive their first round of puppy vaccines.
Pups are health checked by a veterinarian prior to going home.
We provide detailed medical records for you to hand off to your veterinarian to insure proper continuity of care.
We also provide documentation of health clearances on both parents.
Please note that we do not remove front dew claws. We are happy to share our thinking on this with you.
We cover the cost of both AKC and microchip registration. (Note: all of our pups come with AKC Limited Registration unless we have come to a mutual agreement about Full Registration.) Not sure what this means? Don’t worry. We’ll go over it in detail.
